Wedding date: Dec. 29, 2012
Her story: Annie Balczerak, 31, grew up near Hunt Valley. She is a real estate agent at Prudential Home Sale WGC Realty in Baltimore. Her father, Edwin, is a retired pharmacist. Her mother, Patricia, is a retired schoolteacher.
His story: Tom Molloy, 31, grew up in Baltimore. He is an emergency room physician's assistant at Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore. His father, Patrick, owns a contracting business. His mother, Agnes, owns an after-school program.
Their story: Annie and Tom met through mutual friends during a singles' trip to Costa Rica in March 2009. When a photographer at the resort asked the two to do a photo shoot, they found out they had a lot in common. Their first date was tubing at Gunpowder Falls State Park in June 2009.
The proposal: Thomas proposed on Annie's birthday in February 2012 during a hike at Gunpowder with their dog, a St. Bernard-Labrador mix.
As it turns out, Tom had hidden the ring — a round diamond with a square halo designed by Lotus Jewelry Studio in Timonium — in his backpack, along with champagne and glasses to celebrate the occasion.
The venue: The couple selected Corpus Christi Parish in Bolton Hill for the ceremony.
"I've been to Corpus Christi for a few weddings, and it's just stunning to me," Annie says. "It just feels very intimate and homey. We love ... the neighborhood. It was a good fit."
Her dress: Annie wore an ivory Serafina silk chiffon gown with spaghetti straps from Lily's Bridal Boutique in Baltimore. She also wore the mink shawl her mother wore in her wedding, emerald teardrop earrings and gold peep-toe shoes.
Bridesmaids' dresses: The bridesmaids wore spiced wine-and-emerald dresses from J. Crew.
Men's apparel: The groomsmen wore Cambridge gray suits from Jos. A. Bank, while Tom wore a gray tie and dark navy suit from J. Crew.
Flowers: Wicked Willow in Baltimore designed the boutonnieres and bouquets. Annie's bouquet featured white baby roses, hydrangeas and eucalyptus leaves.
The reception: Annie and Tom chose Hotel Monaco downtown for its vintage appeal.
"We just wanted something inside with a grand-hotel kind of feel," says Tom. "It was really amazing."
Music: The couple selected DJ Frosty from Philadelphia for entertainment.
"We were drenched in sweat by the time it was over because we were breaking it down," says Annie, who did a traditional slow dance with her father and then broke out into "Gangnam Style."
Dessert: SugarBakers Cakes in Catonsville baked the wedding cake, which featured carrot cake, Smith Island cake and yellow cake.
Charitable favors: In lieu of favors, Annie and Tom gave their guests breast cancer pins and made donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in honor of Tom's mother and other family members who'd been diagnosed with breast cancer.
"We thought this would be more meaningful," says Annie.
