MISSED OPPORTUNITIES: During a full-team exercise, quarterback Joe Flacco tried to float a pass to his left, where running back Ricky Williams was open. But outside linebacker Paul Kruger stepped in front of Williams and returned the interception about 40 yards for a touchdown. However, an official ruled that Kruger was offsides, which negated the interception. Four plays later, Flacco overthrew rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith, and rookie cornerback Jimmy Smith dropped the interception.

FRUSTRATED FLACCO: On second-and-5 from the 36, Smith beat his defender down the right sideline. But Flacco's long pass sailed over Smith, and Flacco vented his frustration by bellowing an expletive.

STOPPING THE RUN: The defense had some success at penetrating the line of scrimmage and stopping the running backs in the backfield. Rookie cornerback Talmadge Jackson stood up rookie Anthony Allen, defensive tackle Cornell Banks impeded Williams, nose tackle Terrence Cody grabbed Jalen Parmele in a bear hug with his right arm, and rookie defensive tackle Bryan Hall stopped Allen.

STILL WORKING OUT THE KINKS: During a full-team drill, there was some miscommunication between Flacco and wide receiver Lee Evans. Evans evidently thought the call was a running play, and he went to block cornerback Domonique Foxworth, but Flacco zipped a pass in Evans' direction that fell to the turf.

MORE SACKS: Even without five starters on the field , the defense got to the quarterbacks seven times. Outside linebacker Sergio Kindle led the unit with two sacks.

HARFMAN GETS HIS KICKS IN: With Billy Cundiff getting limited practice, rookie Jake Harfman got his turn in the spotlight. The former USC kicker/punter went 5-of-7. He missed wide right from 44 and 46 yards, but he capped his day by nailing a 51-yarder.

INJURIES: Linebackers Ray Lewis, Terrell Suggs, Jarret Johnson and Brendon Ayanbadejo, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, defensive end Cory Redding, wide receiver Anquan Boldin, running back Ray Rice and cornerback Lardarius Webb were given the day off. Right guard Marshal Yanda (back spasms), cornerback Chris Carr (left hamstring), center Matt Birk (left knee), wide receiver James Hardy (hamstring), and rookie running back Damien Berry (unspecified) did not practice. Starting left guard Ben Grubbs, who was given a day of rest on Monday, returned to practice. Strong safety Bernard Pollard practiced, but he wore a bag of ice on his left knee towards the end of the session.

OVERHEARD: "Let's move this thing down the field. This is the second defense." — Coach John Harbaugh to the first-team offense during a full-team exercise starting the offense at its own 20-yard line. The offense went three-and-out.

NEXT DAY'S SCHEDULE: Wednesday's session is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. and could run as long as three hours. All practices are closed to the public.
