Ball movement and trusting teammates are two things the Milford Mill boys basketball team preaches on offense.
The No. 5 Millers found an ideal example in the closing seconds against No. 10 Edmondson in the final night of the 17th annual Basketball Academy at
Holding the ball for the last shot with 30 seconds left in a tie game, sophomore guard Justin Jenifer started his move to the basket with seven seconds left. When the Red Storm defense collapsed on him, he found senior guard Davonte Williams in the left corner. Williams found nothing but net with a 3-pointer at the buzzer that gave the Millers a thrilling 69-66 win over Edmondson.
Senior guard Bruce Watkins led the Millers with 24 points, Williams finished with 15 and Jenifer added 12, along with the deciding assist.
Edmondson appeared to take control of an evenly played game when Kani Coles gave the Red Storm a 66-60 lead with 2:12 left. But the Millers had the answers at both ends the rest of the way with Watkins scoring four straight points to tie the game to set up Williams' heroics.
"The last play we wanted to get the last shot, and Justin did a great job penetrating and kicking it [to Williams] for an open shot. We talk about ball movement and trusting your teammate, and Justin did that well," Milford Mill coach Mike Silverman said.
Milford Mill improves to 14-1 on the season, while Edmondson falls to 12-4. The Red Storm was led by their senior backcourt, with Isaiah Tripp scoring 20 points and Darius Walker adding 16.
Edmondson trailed 58-55 midway through the fourth quarter when it appeared to take control behind Tripp. He converted a three-point play and then hit a 3-pointer to give the Red Storm a 61-58 lead with 3:23 to play.
After the Red Storm stopped the Millers with two blocks inside on the next possession, Tripp converted another three-point play to make it 64-58.
But, down 66-60, the Millers closed out the game with the last nine points. Jenifer hit two free throws before Watkins four points to tie the score, setting up Williams' game-winning shot.
