The hole Largo dug in its Class 2A South regional semifinal game at Glenelg on Wednesday night was just too deep to climb out of.
There would be no come-from-behind victory like the one the Lions enjoyed against Oakland Mills on Monday night, as the No. 6 Gladiators cruised to a 75-45 victory. Glenelg will host Calvert in the regional final Friday at 7 p.m.
The Gladiators focused on setting the tone in the first few minutes of Wednesday's semifial, pushing the ball on offense or kicking it out for a 3-point attempt, all the while playing smothering defense.
When Emily Russo hit all three free throws she was awarded when she was fouled as the first quarter ended, it put Glenelg up, 20-10.
The Gladiators played an even better second quarter, outscoring Largo, 27-2.
"The more we were scoring it kept the momentum up," Glenelg's Danielle Burris said. "We were doing everything right. It was probably a textbook of what we do."
Sam Heisig led the Gladiators with 21 points, and Burris and Russo added 13 each. Six other Gladiators got in the scorebook.
"It was a total team effort," Glenelg coach Don Beall said. "It doesn't get much better than that. It was a clinic."
Crystal Arinze (14 points) and Chelsea Okoro (12) came off the bench to lead Largo's scoring. All of their points came in the second half.
"That second quarter did us in," said Largo coach Ayana Ball-Ward, whose team finishes the season 16-8. "Us going down by 35 at the half was hard, but we did a great job of trying to come back in the second half."
