For a few minutes on Saturday afternoon, St. Vincent Pallotti's Antonio Santoro was the most popular person on McDonogh's campus. Unfortunately for him and the No. 1 Eagles, it didn't last.
Santoro lost a 6-1 decision in the championship match at 285 pounds to Good Counsel's Jemal Averette, giving the Falcons the three points they needed to pass host McDonogh to win their first-ever A Division team championship at the Maryland Independent Schools state tournament.
The Falcons accumulated 266 points en route to the win, besting McDonogh's total of 264.5 points. No. 3 John Carroll (216 points),
Prep (198.5), and No. 6 Archbishop Spalding (188) rounded out the top five.
"We certainly knew this could happen," McDonogh coach Pete Welch said about being edged by Good Counsel. "We weren't involved in that last match, and they did what they had to do. We needed a bigger lead going into the heavier weights, and it didn't happen. It's disappointing to lose, but it's not like we wrestled poorly. "
Local wrestlers won nine of the 14 weight classes in the tournament.
McDonogh freshman TK Megonigal captured the 103-pound title with a 7-0 decision over John Carroll sophomore C.J. Skokowski. At 145 pounds, Eagles junior Jack Clark won his third consecutive MIS title with a 15-6 decision over Georgetown Prep's Michael
McDonogh sophomore Myles Martin pinned Georgetown Prep's Brendan Coyne in 3:30 to win the championship at 160 pounds, while Eagles senior Tyler Patrick beat DeMatha's Clay Conaway, 7-1, in the title match at 182 pounds.
At 132 pounds, John Carroll senior Scott Strappelli captured the title with a 5-1 win over Georgetown Prep's Daniel Sanchez. Strappelli lost in earlier rounds in each of the past two years after beating Sanchez for the title as a freshman.
"I kind of feel like
," Strappelli said. "I get to go out on top. This was a major goal for me, and I offer all praise to God for letting me make the most of my abilities."
At 170 pounds, John Carroll senior Hunter Ritter pinned Georgetown Prep's Troy Murtha in 1:41.
St. Paul's junior Jack Mutchnik won the championship at 126 pounds when he recorded a takedown with 58 seconds left to break a tie and beat No. 13 Mount St. Joseph's Zeke Salvo, 6-4. Mutchnik had trailed in the match before rallying to win.
"I've wrestled him three times in the last few weeks, so we know each other pretty well," Mutchnik said. "I just stayed calm, and at the end, I waited for my opportunity. When it came, I took it."
St. Paul's sophomore Ryan Friedman defeated Georgetown Prep's Colin Kowalski, 6-0, in the title match at 113 pounds. Archbishop Spalding junior Logan Breitenbach scored a 3-0 decision over McDonogh's Toby Hague at 152 pounds.
