Bentley teases all-new Flying Spur ahead of Geneva debut

We knew it was coming. Now we know when.

Bentley will use the Feb. 20 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland to unveil its all-new Flying Spur sedan, the company announced Monday. Until then, we have a short teaser video to whet our appetite.

Based largely on the Continental GT coupe that was revised in 2011, the Flying Spur will likely receive many of the same style updates. This includes sharper edges on the body panels, and headlamps offset by a pair of smaller, ancillary lights.

The back of the new Flying Spur is only visible for a moment in the video, but shows the biggest style departure from the coupe: chrome-rimmed taillights not unlike those on Bentley’s concept SUV, the EXP 9 F.

The automaker is mum on powertrain details for now, but expect the Flying Spur to have the same turbocharged 6.0-liter W12 as the coupe. In that car, it currently makes 567 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque and routs this power to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Two variants of the coupe are also available, one of which will very likely be made available in Flying Spur form at some point. That car is the Speed, which has 616 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque from the W12 engine. Less obvious is whether Bentley will put the turbocharged V-8 into the Flying Spur to create a lower-priced, more engaging version.

This new Flying Spur will join an updated Mulsanne sedan at the Geneva show. That car, which sits on top of the Flying Spur in Bentley’s hierarchy, will be available with features only the 1% would demand, including duck down filling in the headrests and footrests.

The new Flying Spur and updated Mulsanne will join other high-priced models showing up in Geneva. This includes Ferrari’s next supercar, the McLaren P1, a possible Corvette Stingray convertible, Rolls Royce Wraith and Lexus IS 300h. Stay tuned to Highway 1 for more updates.
