Jaguar previews ultra-rare XFR-S for L.A. Auto Show

There will be a rare cat sighting in Los Angeles next week.

That’s when Jaguar’s ultra-exclusive XFR-S will make its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The automaker says it will bring to the U.S. only 100 examples of this high-performance sedan in 2014.

Jaguar is mum on powertrain details and additional photos, but some educated guessing says to expect the same 5-liter, supercharged V-8 that’s found on the only other R-S car Jaguar makes, the XKR-S coupe and convertible.

In that application, it makes 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque and kicks the car from 0-60 mph in 4.2 seconds. This new sedan’s acceleration time may tick up a tenth or so because it will be slightly heavier. Other upgrades over other XF sedans will probably include larger wheels wrapped around bigger brakes, a revised suspension system and various carbon-fiber exterior trim pieces.

With Jaguar’s lesser XFR sedan aimed at mid-size, go-fast European sedans like the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, the BMW M5, and the Audi S6, this XFR-S model will occupy some relatively unique territory, especially when price is factored in. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but don’t be surprised if the XFR-S hits the $100,000-110,000 range.

Full details on the car will be announced during Jaguar and Land Rover’s press conference Nov. 28. The two sister companies, which are owned by Indian automaker Tata, will also host the North American debut of Jaguar’s ultra-sexy F-Type roadster and Land Rover’s Range Rover SUV.

We’ll be covering this and all the L.A. Auto Show news, so stay tuned to Highway 1 for complete coverage of the press days. The show will be open to the public from Nov. 30 - Dec. 9.
