Pricing, speed announced for McLaren’s P1 plug-in hybrid supercar

We know the horsepower, we know the design, now we know the speed and price of McLaren’s forthcoming P1 supercar. Not surprisingly, both numbers are high.

McLaren announced Tuesday that the plug-in hybrid will cost $1.15 million when it goes on sale later this year. Just 375 copies of this car will be made.

Those 375 buyers will have at their disposal a very fast machine. McLaren says the 903-horsepower P1 will do zero to 62 mph in less than three seconds, zero to 124 mph in less than seven seconds, and zero to 186 mph in less than 17 seconds.

It will do all this on its way to an electronically limited 217.5 mph.

This breathtaking acceleration puts it in rarified supercar territory currently occupied by brands such as Koenigsegg, Pagani and Ferrari.

The McLaren gets all this power from a twin-turbocharged V-8 similar to the one in its lesser MP4-12C supercar. The 3.8-liter unit is paired with an electric motor for a total of 903 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission directs this power to the rear wheels.

The P1’s batteries are mounted directly behind the passenger compartment and are charged by the motor while driving, or can be charged by plugging in the car when parked. McLaren says it can travel on electric power only for up to 12 miles at speeds of 30 mph.

The car is to officially debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
