Nissan issues service campaign on 104,000 Juke crossovers

Nissan is asking for more than 104,000 of its Juke crossovers back to fix an issue with the engine timing chain.

The automaker announced Thursday that it was issuing a voluntary service campaign on 104,439 Jukes from the 2011-13 model years. The vehicles’ timing chain needs to be replaced, according to Nissan. The chain guide and crank sprocket will also be replaced.

The repairs will be done free of charge by Nissan. Owners will be notified this month if their Juke is affected by Thursday’s announcement.

No accidents or injuries have been reported as a result of defective timing chains, the automaker said.

A voluntary service campaign differs from a government-mandated recall in that it deals with a defect that’s not yet a safety risk, but needs the automaker’s attention nevertheless.

Nissan’s news comes in the wake of an announcement earlier in the day that General Motors was recalling 2.7 million vehicles in the U.S. for a variety of issues.

Thursday’s tally means that about 17 million vehicles have been recalled so far this year, putting 2014 on pace to break the industry’s record of 30.8 million recalls in 2004.
