Ford recalls 33,000 C-Max hybrids

Ford Motor Co. recalled more than 33,000 C-Max hybrids over the weekend after testing revealed vehicle roofs may not sufficiently protect drivers and passengers.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration discovered the defect during regular testing of 2013 models, and brought the issue to Ford’s attention.

The recall will affect 33,021 C-Max hybrids, specifically those without the optional panoramic roof, built at a Michigan assembly plant between Jan. 19, 2012, and June 26 of this year.

No accidents or injuries have been reported related to the roof deficiency. Ford announced a smaller recall of C-Max hybrids earlier this year to inspect child locks on the vehicles’ left rear doors.

To correct this latest issue, the automaker will ask C-Max drivers to bring in their cars to have plastic energy absorbers installed between roofs and the fabric headliners on the inside of vehicles. A spokeswoman for the automaker said Ford would begin notifying drivers by mail in mid-August.
