Lamborghini Aventador Roadster takes over runway at Miami airport

Do not adjust your monitors; those are indeed six Lamborghini Aventador Roadsters cutting in front of a Boeing 777 on a runway at Miami International Airport. Don’t worry, it was sanctioned.

The event was organized to mark the world media debut of the 700-horsepower Roadster, the drop-top version of the Aventador supercar. This new version shares the drivetrain from the fixed-roof version -- a 6.5-liter V-12 engine routs power to all four wheels through a seven-speed automated manual transmission.

Lamborghini says the Roadster’s top speed is 217 mph and that it will do zero-60 mph in less than three seconds. The two-piece carbon-fiber top is manually removable and stores in the front trunk.

Those on hand in Miami were able to push these Lamborghinis to 210 mph on Monday, in a demonstration sanctioned by the Federal Aviation Administration and Miami-Dade County. No arrivals or departures at the airport were affected by the stunt, officials said.

The automaker points out that no current jet aircraft hits 210 mph on a runway, with most needing only 150 mph to 180 mph to get airborne. Fortunately, none of the Roadsters took flight during the demonstration.

The Roadster commands a $44,100 premium over the coupe, for a total of $445,300 (which includes gas-guzzler tax). Lamborghini says the cars are already back-ordered by at least a year; deliveries for those who have already put down a payment are scheduled to start in July.

Highway 1 will log some seat time in this Roadster in the near future, so stay tuned. Unfortunately, it will not be on a runway at LAX.
