General Motors Corp. said it would temporarily close 13 assembly plants in the U.S. and Mexico as it tried to control growing inventory caused by slumping sales.

GM said the closures would start in May and end in July. GM plans to cut production by 190,000 vehicles. It said the shutdowns would help control dealer inventories and bring production in line with sales.
