This Culver City-based chain is all about customization. Customers are given a clipboard with a list of ingredients -- including turkey, Danish blue cheese, grilled pineapple and tzatziki sauce -- and asked to build their own gourmet burger. More than 312,000 combinations are possible and can be paired with beer, wine and cocktails. From its first location in 2003, the Counter has opened more than 30 restaurants, including some in Hawaii, Texas and Ireland. The company says it has more than 100 restaurants in development. In 2006, Oprah Winfrey named the chain one of her favorites.
