The telecommunications company tried to leapfrog competitor Verizon by buying T-Mobile for $39 billion, only to be stymied by the Department of Justice, the Federal Communications Commission and consumers. Critics of the deal claimed it would have created a less competitive wireless industry and hiked prices. For its trouble, the company is expected to shell out a breakup fee of at least $4 billion to T-Mobile.
