Amazon launches Kindle sale to ‘thank’ FAA for easing device rules

Online behemoth Amazon.com launched a one-day sale Monday on Kindle readers, taking advantage of new federal rules easing restrictions on using portable electronic devices on planes.

The Federal Aviation Administration announced last week that passengers can use such devices even when the plane is below 10,000 feet as long as they are switched to “airplane mode.”

In the past, all electronic devices had to be shut down and stowed until planes were cruising at above 10,000 feet. Cellphone calls remain banned throughout a commercial flight.

Amazon advertised its sale on its website Monday, saying “Thank you, FAA.” The sale’s 15% discount applies to the Kindle, Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HDX -- on Monday only.

To get the deal, visitors to Amazon.com must enter the promo code ThnksFAA.

Delta Airlines and JetBlue Airways were the first two airlines last week to submit safety protocols to the FAA and get approval to let passengers use their electronic devices during takeoffs and landings. Other airlines are expected to do the same soon.
