Build your own 1960s Mustang with new line of Ford parts
The 50th anniversary of the Ford Mustang is still two years away, but Ford is starting to ramp up the marketing and promotion machine.
Ford Motor Co. is saying now is the time to begin restoration projects of the classic pony car, and it wants enthusiasts to know that it has virtually every part -- door handles to entire bodies -- for sale.
For example, the automaker put a replacement body for the 1965 Mustang convertible on sale for $15,000 earlier this spring.
Ford said it “aggressively supports” restorations and that about 95% of all the parts needed to build a “new” 1964 to 1966 Mustang are available today.
The Mustang convertible body includes the complete assembly, all the sheet metal from the hood to the trunk, said Dennis Mondrach, Ford Restoration Parts licensing manager. “It is designed to enable fans of the original Mustang to build the classic of their dreams using a body that is stronger than the original,” he said.
He said that the replacement parts have the look and fit and perform exactly as the originals. Many are made from the original Ford tools that have been preserved for the restoration market.

The supply of replacement parts is critical to a Mustang restoration project, which typically will cost about $50,000.
Mondrach said it was difficult to find original 1964-66 Mustangs and parts such as fenders, bumpers and grilles from scrapyards because most that were good enough to be reused were long ago picked clean by restorers.
