La Guardia opens for limited service; flight cancellations drop
New York and New Jersey’s three major airports were operating on a limited basis Thursday, only days after super storm Sandy effectively closed the nation’s busiest airspace.
La Guardia Airport reopened Thursday, a day after John F. Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport relaunched operations Wednesday, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Still, the nation’s airlines have canceled 873 flights on Thursday, most flying in and out of those three East Coast airports, according to the flight monitoring site Flightstats.com. In contrast, nearly 3,000 flights were canceled Wednesday.
Operations were also returning to normal Thursday at airports in Boston, Philadeliphia and Washington, D.C.
Port Authority officials urged passengers to check with their airlines on the status of their flights before heading to the airport. At Los Angeles International Airport, 16 flights were canceled Thursday, primarily flights to New York and New Jersey.
Most airlines have offered to waive the fees that they typically charge to rebook a flight. The terms of such waivers vary by airline. The travel website Airfarewatchdog.com has posted a listing of the terms for such waivers for most airlines.
