Luxury department store chain Nordstrom Inc. will open six pop-up shops in February stocked with wares from up-and-coming designers.

The shops, including one at the Grove shopping mall in Los Angeles and another in San Francisco, will feature 10 designers who are finalists for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, which awards $300,000 every year to the winner and is intended to nurture young design talent.

The finalists include Assembly New York, Tabitha Simmons, Wes Gordon, A.L.C. and Illesteva.

The fashion fund has previously raised the profiles of now well-known luxury labels such as Prabal Gurung, Derek Lam and Proenza Schouler.

“We think that our customers will be excited to have access to the collections of these talented designers,” Jeffrey Kalinksy, Nordstrom’s executive vice president of design, said in a statement.

Pop-up shops, once reserved for seasonal items such as Halloween costumes or Christmas decor, have now become a strategy adopted by mainstream retailers to create buzz with limited-edition merchandise in sometimes unusual locations. The concept has even extended beyond retailing and into temporary pop-up restaurants.
