Hotels around Los Angeles International Airport are rapidly selling out as stranded travelers look for shelter following a fatal shooting at the airport.

Tourism officials said the Sheraton, Marriott, Hilton, Westin and Four Point hotels near LAX have sold out, with the Radisson filling up quickly.

So far, it doesn’t look like too many travelers are taking the other alternative: renting a car and driving out of Los Angeles.

Bob Barton, president of the American Car Rental Assn., said he had not heard of a great demand for rental cars out of Los Angeles. But he said most travelers will probably wait a few hours before turning their flight into a road trip. “It’s too early still,” he said.

When travelers do decide to abandon their flights for a car trip, Barton said, they drive to destinations within a few hours of the airport.

To help stranded travelers find a hotel, the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board has created a help line: (888) 831-7176.

The tourism board has also posted a link that can direct travelers to hotels near the airport.
