PETOSKEY -- Little Traverse Tileworks, a recently launched Petoskey business, focuses on the design and manufacturing of decorative tile.
The company specializes in the development of custom and commemorative ceramic tiles for use in decorative and functional applications.
"After talking to several builders and designers, we felt there was a niche in the market and that we could fill it well," said owner Dana Andrews. "The rustic and artistic nature of tile fits naturally in Northern Michigan, and our unique process allows us to work with just about any design a customer can dream up."
Andrews launched Little Traverse Tileworks in 2011. The company works in partnership with Sturgeon River Pottery and operates out of its facilities at 3031 Charlevoix Ave., Petoskey.
Originally the company offered only its own designs but quickly expanded to include custom tile creation.
Andrews noted that the company's customers to date have included individual homeowners looking for specific tile designs, stone masons and interior designers who have unique design requirements.
Cora Smith, manager of design and production, credits the company's customers with providing most of the inspiration.
"We take a lot of our inspiration from the people and natural environment here in Northern Michigan. Our lake series -- tiles depicting maps of the local inland lakes - has been a huge success." said Smith. "Our tiles are beautiful and also completely functional; we've done everything from kitchen backsplashes to framed wall hangings."
The company also recently added the production of commemorative tiles to its offerings.
"We did a 2011 commemorative tile for Mackinac Island this year that was awesome," said Smith.
Commemorative tiles are often used by organizations for projects such as fundraising and corporate promotions.
Smith added, "We're definitely still working out some of the kinks, but demand has been much greater than anticipated so our primary mission right now is just trying to keep up. It's been very exciting."
Hours for Little Traverse Tileworks are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (231) 347-0590.
