My boss is so bad that I won a vacation
A man with cancer whose boss threw away his disability benefits paperwork and a help-desk employee who was required to remain at his desk during an office fire were declared the winners of the second annual AFL-CIO My Bad Boss contest Tuesday.
The cancer patient, using the pseudonym Pete Yonski, was the “People’s Choice” Grand Prize winner and will receive a weeklong condo vacation and $1,000 toward airfare. The help-desk employee, dubbed Steaming Mad, was the winner of the contest’s “Most Outrageous Story” Grand Prize and receives a week at the Royal Hotel Vegas and $500 toward airfare.
Six runners-up received “Bad Boss Survival Kits” that included earplugs -- to use when a bad boss is yelling -- and “The Very Best of Aretha Franklin.” The CD features Franklin’s hit song “Respect.”
The union said it started the contest as a way to expose the problem of bad management and to allow contestants to share their horror stories.
“While this contest is partly a fun way to vent, it also shines a not-very-flattering light on the American workplace,” said Karen Nussbaum, executive director of the union’s Working America lobbying arm.
