Former NBA star Brad Daugherty goes coast-to-coast with home purchase

Brad Daugherty has made a coast-to-coast real estate play. The retired NBA star turned racing team owner, who previously made his home in his native North Carolina, has bought a house in the Hope Ranch area of Santa Barbara for about $2.36 million.

Set at the end of a winding drive, the property includes an updated ranch-style house, a swimming pool with a spa, a three-stall barn and a tack area on more than two acres.

Built in 1953 and recently remodeled, the single-story floor plan has open-space formal areas, a center-island kitchen with a tiled backsplash, three bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms in 2,136 square feet of space. Inlaid hardwood floors, custom lighting and crown molding are among the interior details.

Outdoors, the pastoral setting centers on a stone-lined patio with a fire pit, lounge setting and a built-in barbecue, set off by mature oaks and palms. Adjacent to the pool is a cabana with an outdoor shower.

The rancher came on the market in January with an asking price of $2.595 million. In previous years, it went for $2.3 million in 2012 and $1.584 million in 2009.

Carey Kendall of Village Properties was the listing agent, according to the Multiple Listing Service. Jonathan Gilkeson of Keller Williams Santa Barbara represented Daugherty and his wife, Heidi. The exact sales price was $2,356,500.

Daugherty, 49, played under Dean Smith at the University of North Carolina, where he twice earned All-ACC first team honors. The former No. 1 overall draft pick went on to make five NBA All-Star teams in eight seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers before his career was cut short due to a recurring back injury.

Since retiring in 1996, Daugherty has dabbled in NASCAR as a team owner and racing analyst. He currently serves as a college basketball and NBA analyst for ESPN.
