Huell Howser estate lists desert retreat at $395,000 [Photos]
Huell Howser’s house in Twentynine Palms has come on the market at $395,000. Proceeds from the sale of the late travelogue host’s desert retreat will go to Chapman University.
The Midcentury Modern home, built in 1953, has 2,221 square feet of living space that Howser renovated after he bought the property more than 15 years ago for $160,000. He infused the interiors with industrial-style minimalist details including concrete kitchen counters and floors, stainless-steel baseboards and a master bath sink made by inverting a vintage streetlight fixture.
The house, which retains its original exterior and footprint, features walls of glass and a wood-burning fireplace in the living room, a breakfast bar, two bedrooms, a den/office and 2.5 bathrooms.
The garage was converted to entertainment space.
A swimming pool, a spa, a fire pit and sculpture gardens of found objects are among exterior amenities.
An architectural gem in the desert
The property includes five lots with a combined 11.9 acres of land. An additional 71 acres Howser bought from former Angels owner Jackie Autry is also for sale.
Howser, who died last year at 67, is remembered for his more than two-decades-long television series “California’s Gold,” which took viewers to notable places throughout the state.
