For $20 million, enjoy some alone time on a 700-acre island paradise in the Bahamas
For most people seeking a getaway, spending a week on the beach does the trick. For the select few with $20 million to spend and the urge for a more dramatic solution, this 700-acre private island could be the answer.
Located in the Berry Islands of the Bahamas, which sit about 150 miles east of Miami, the island offers 12 miles of coastline across 13 white sandy beaches.
Physical remnants of the island’s storied history are spread across the tree-filled property.
British speedboat racer Marion Barbara “Joe” Carstairs bought the coastal retreat in 1934, and her upper-echelon guest lists included British royalty — such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor — and various Hollywood stars, according to the real estate agent for the property.
During her ownership, Carstairs added a mansion, guest cottage, music room, staff dormitory, museum and sea plane hangar. In addition, a lighthouse helps guide ships, and a 4,000-foot airstrip allows for quick in-and-out access.
While many of the buildings are in disrepair, the essential infrastructure is in place, according to the listing agent. Diesel generators provide electricity, rainwater cisterns and wells provide water and septic tanks provide sewage disposal.
The island sits five miles west of Chub Cay, a main entry port with fuel, supplies and restaurants.
The Berry Islands, nicknamed the “Fish Bowl of the Bahamas,” include 30 islands across roughly 30 square miles. The area is primarily known as a hot spot for fishing and diving.
