Barry Bonds is trying to hit one out of Beverly Park
Perhaps hoping to hit a home run of a different sort, former baseball outfielder Barry Bonds has put his Italian-inspired estate in Beverly Park up for sale at $25 million.
Designed to function both as a place to host large-scale events and as a family home, the 17,100-square-foot villa sits beside a circular motor court centered on a multi-tiered fountain. The 1.85 acres of grounds include an outdoor kitchen, a swimming pool with a cabana, a 2,100-square-foot sports court, an olive grove, a lawn and a rose garden.
The interiors feature ceilings as high as 30 feet, a hand-painted wall mural of the Tuscany landscape, limestone columns and Venetian plaster/faux finish walls. Rooms include a walnut-paneled office, a 12-seat theater, a game room, a wine cellar, a gym, seven bedrooms and 13 bathrooms.
Bonds, 48, played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the San Francisco Giants during a two-decade-plus career that included seven most valuable player honors. He failed to gain entrance into the Baseball Hall of Fame last month. It was his first year of eligibility after a 2011 conviction for obstruction of justice related to the government’s investigation of steroid use and the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO). Bonds is appealing the conviction.
He paid $8.7 million for the property in 2002, public records show. The estate is being offered furnished.

Celebrity landlords seeking tenants
Among celebrity owners of L.A.-area homes for lease are the Miami Heat’s Chris Bosh, actress Kristen Stewart’s mother Jules and actor Steven Guttenberg.
Bosh, the 28-year-old power forward, bought his resort-like place in Pacific Palisades in late December for $9.4 million and has put it up for lease at $45,000 a month. The contemporary Mediterranean includes six bedrooms and eight bathrooms within its nearly 11,000 square feet of living space. The infinity pool features a swim-up bar and lounge area. Other outdoor amenities include a kitchen, pizza oven and shower. Inside, there’s a movie theater and a sports bar. Donna Bohana and Shen Schulz of Solstice International Realty in Malibu are the leasing agents.
Regardless of whether this Malibu beach house really is owned by Kristen Stewart’s mother, whose name is on record, or the “Twilight” actress herself, the modern home is available for lease at $21,500 a month. Ocean views, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and balconies or decks from most rooms are among features of the five-bedroom, five-bathroom house with 5,800 square feet of living space. Actor-comedian Guttenberg, 54, of “Police Academy” fame, is offering up a pad in Pacific Palisades at $12,500 a month. The Spanish-style house has three fireplaces, a bar, five bedrooms, five bathrooms and 4,366 square feet of living space. The more than half an acre lot contains a swimming pool. Real estate businessman Fred Sands has purchased a newly built beach home in Malibu for close to its asking price of $14.7 million.
The sellers are Tom Mendoza, vice chairman of NetApp, and his wife, Kathy, who has served as a sales director and an operations director at the data management firm.
Kathy Mendoza spent three years working on the house, bringing in roof tiles from an Italian convent and importing the teak windows from Italy. Her current project is a castle restoration in Crete.
The contemporary Mediterranean features a courtyard entry, limestone and white oak floors, a floating-style staircase, five bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms and 6,300 square feet of living space.
Sands sold the independent brokerage that bore his name in 2000 to Coldwell Banker. He heads Vintage Capital Group and Vintage Real Estate, which acquires and reinvents troubled malls. His main residence is in Bel-Air.
The Mendozas paid $8.303 million for the Malibu property in 2004, public records show.

Actor Esai Morales has sold his home in Hollywood Hills West for $1.175 million.

Morales, 50, played Lt. Tony Rodriguez on “NYPD Blue” (2001-04) and starred with Lou Diamond Phillips in “La Bamba” (1987). More recently he had a recurring role on “Fairly Legal” (2011-12).
He paid $749,000 for the property in 2000, public records show.

The 3,200-square-foot-plus courtyard-style home features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a laundry room and an office. There is a studio with a wood-burning stove. Burdon, 71, was named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 greatest singers of all time and is in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Among the songs he popularized were “House of the Rising Sun,” “We’ve Gotta Get Out of This Place,” “Spill the Wine” and “See See Rider.”
He paid $640,000 for the property in 2007, public records show.
