Used to be that "tiling" and "one day" only appeared together in a "I'll get around to that tiling project one day" kind of way.
Now, thanks to a new adhesive product, tiling can be a project you actually complete — start to finish — in one day.
Bondera TileMatSet is a pressure-sensitive adhesive to which you apply tile directly, eliminating the need for mortar or mastic. Picture double-sided tape, only really, really strong.
To use Bondera, you remove the plastic liner, press it to the horizontal or vertical surface you want to tile, peel back the top release liner and press your tiles in place. Once all your tiles are placed, apply grout, wipe clean, and you're done. Bondera recommends applying grout within eight hours of fixing your tiles.
"It's much easier for DIYers who maybe wouldn't have ventured into tiling before," says Ashley Peterson, Bondera account supervisor.
You can still use tile spacers with Bondera, although the longer you leave them in place, the harder they'll be to remove, as the adhesive's bond strength is designed to increase over time.
The adhesive is water-repellant and mold-resistant, so Bondera is designed to work well in wet areas, such as showers, bathroom walls and backsplashes. (It's not recommended for pools or hot tubs.)
You can apply Bondera to pretty much any flat, stable surface — drywall, plywood, metal, laminate, even old tile. It works best, according to the manufacturers, with factory-made flat-back or cross-backed tiles, because some handmade or stone tiles with rough or uneven backs might not bond to the adhesive as well.
One Bondera roll covers 10 square feet. You can buy rolls 12-inches wide for walls and vertical applications ($42.87), 16-inches wide for countertops and horizontal surfaces ($31.98) and 4-inches wide for smaller areas ($17.02). It's available at select Lowe's stores or at lowes.com.
