Apple sends brochure on proposed new campus to neighbors

Apple mailed a brochure to its neighbors in Cupertino seeking feedback on its planned “Campus 2” that would increase the company’s presence in the area.

Inside the brochure, the company revealed several details of the planned building, which was revealed last summer by company founder Steve Jobs prior to his death in October.

Among the details, Apple said it plans to break ground on the project sometime later this year. That hinges on the city approving the project, but if it does, Apple hopes to begin occupying the new location by 2015.

In the brochure (sent out last week by Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer), the company said the new campus, which will house 13,000 employees and leave 300,000 square feet of space available for future expansion, will not replace its current location at 1 Infinite Loop as Apple’s main hub.

Apple also said that Campus 2 will get a LEED certification, which is a measure of a building’s sustainability. This is likely due in part to the building’s huge solar array that will be located on its roof.

Among the disappointing news in the brochure, which was obtained by 9 to 5 Mac, is that the building will not be open to the public or include a new store, continuing to leave Apple’s home city without an Apple Store.

The new building will also house a “world-class” auditorium, which begs the question of whether Apple will no longer use events like next month’s Worldwide Developers Conference to launch new products.
