Apple reportedly considering new colors and sizes for iPhones

Share

The next time you buy an iPhone, you may be able to pick one out from a variety of different colors and sizes.

A report Thursday by Reuters says Apple is looking at launching various versions of the smartphone over the next year to better compete against rival Samsung.

Citing multiple unnamed sources, the report says Apple is looking at an iPhone with a 4.7-inch screen as well as one with a 5.7-inch display. That would be much larger than the 4-inch screen found on the iPhone 5, but it’d be perfectly in range with the 5-inch screen on Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 and the 5.5-inch screen on the Galaxy Note II.

Additionally, Apple is looking to cater to lower-end markets by introducing a $99, plastic version of its device that would come in five or six different color options. Reuters reports that this phone could launch in 2014.

The report cites sources from Apple suppliers, who say that the company has approached them about making these different type of devices. But a source cautioned that Apple has a tendency to change plans at the last moment, so it’s unclear if these plans are final.

What you more likely can count on is Apple releasing the next generation of the iPhone in September. The report says the company will begin test production next month and ramp up in August so that it will be ready for launch the following month.
