Despite map flap, most iPhone users have downloaded iOS 6

Share

A new study says most iPhone users have updated to iOS 6, Apple’s latest operating system, despite a number of flaws that have plagued its launch.

The study says 60% of all iPhone users have installed iOS 6 just two weeks after the operating system’s launch. Chitika, an ad network and analytics firm, put together the study.

Apple is known for having fast adoption rates for its operating systems, but it wouldn’t have been surprising if iOS 6 bucked that trend after suffering from a plethora of problems that have embarrassed the Cupertino tech company since its launched.

Notably, iOS 6’s new Maps app has been so poorly received that Apple chief executive Tim Cook felt the need to apologize for it. Other issues have included problems with Passbook, a new Apple app, and issues connecting to Wi-Fi networks.

As for the other iOS devices, the iPad and the iPod Touch, adoption has been slower than for the iPhone but already iOS 6 is the most used operating system on those devices.

On the iPad, 45% of owners have updated to the new operating system. Behind iOS 6 is iOS 5.1, which is used by 39% of iPad owners.

Adoption drops further for iPod Touch owners, with just 39% having updated to the new operating system. But just like on the iPad, iOS 6 is already the most adopted version of the operating system, followed by iOS 5.1 with a 31% adoption.

The iPhone may have a higher adoption because more versions of that Apple device can upgrade to iOS 6 as opposed to the older versions of the iPad and iPod Touch.

According to Apple’s website, Apple.com, all iPhones since the 3GS, which launched in 2009, can update to iOS 6. Meanwhile, only the second and third generations of the iPad can upgrade. As for the iPod Touch, only fourth- and fifth-generation devices, which will go on sale later this month, can upgrade to iOS 6.
