Apple CEO Tim Cook: ‘We have some incredible things coming out’
Apple Inc. Chief Executive Tim Cook, submitting to a rare public interview Tuesday night, said he’s never been more amazed by the secret products the tech company is working on.
“The juices are flowing, and we have some incredible things coming out,” Cook said on the first night of the D10 conference in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Cook touched on various topics at the interview, including succeeding Steve Jobs as CEO and Apple’s future in the TV market. All the while, Cook maintained a careful balance between keeping the company’s secrets and dropping enough hints to generate excitement about the future.
When asked about the iPad, Cook said the product was just in its “first inning,” but wouldn’t clarify what the second inning would be like. However, he did promise people would like it, according to All Things D, which hosts the conference.
On the topic of his predecessor, Cook said Jobs taught him to remain focused and not settle for good products or very good products, but only the best.
“That’s embedded in Apple,” he said. “I’m not going to witness or permit the change of that.”
The Apple leader also threw a wrench in recent rumors about a larger-screen iPhone. When asked why there was only one new iPhone or iPad at a time, Cook said the company’s approach is to avoid fragmentation unlike Android and to go with one screen size.
But again, Cook left himself enough wiggle room for surprises.
“Our north star is to make the best product,” he said. “There’s not a policy or commandment that says: Thou shalt have one.”
Cook also touched on the topic of TVs, a market the Cupertino, Calif., tech company has long been rumored to be planning to get into.
“This is an area of intense interest for us,” Cook said, adding that Apple was “going to keep pulling the string and see where this takes us.”
As far as the perception that Siri, the talking iPhone assistant, hasn’t lived up to the Apple standard, Cook said he thinks people will be really pleased with where Apple takes Siri in the coming months.
“There’s more that it can do, and we have a lot of people working on this,” he said. “We have some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this.”
The Apple CEO also implied that Facebook could become more integrated with Apple products in the future.
“We have great respect for them. I think we can do more with them,” he said. “Just stay tuned on this one.”
And near the end, Cook reaffirmed that some big Apple surprises may be coming soon, saying he spends his days working with various teams on numerous products.
That includes “some things we didn’t talk about, and maybe some things you wanted to talk about,” he said.
