EBay hit by cyber attack, urges users to change passwords

Following a security breach, EBay said it was asking users to change their passwords.

The online shopping site Wednesday said hackers used stolen employee log-in credentials to compromise a database containing user information.

Among the stolen data were customer names and encrypted passwords, their email addresses, physical addresses, phone numbers and their dates of birth. EBay said no financial data were stolen and no unauthorized activity has been detected.

EBay first identified the cyberattack about two weeks ago and has been working with law enforcement and security experts to investigate it. The security breach is believed to have occurred between late February and early March.

“EBay regrets any inconvenience or concern that this password reset may cause our customers,” the company said in a statement. “We know our customers trust us with their information, and we take seriously our commitment to maintaining a safe, secure and trusted global marketplace.”
