Here’s a cheaper, readily available Google Glass alternative

Share

Google Glass won’t be released to the public until next year, but a cheaper alternative is now available for purchase.

The Vuzix M100 went on sale this week for $1,000 and is ready to ship in two to four weeks.

The device is similar to Google Glass. It runs on the Android platform and connects to users’ smartphones using Bluetooth. The device also features a 5-megapixel camera that can record HD video, and it is capable of running pre-installed apps. It also comes with 4 gigabytes of storage, which can be expanded using microSD cards.

But just like Google Glass, the M100 looks pretty dorky.

The bulk of the M100 is kept in a compartment that sits next to a user’s ear. There is also a video display that connects to the compartment through an extension. That display gives video that is equivalent to the imagery users see when holding a 4-inch screen smartphone about 14 inches away.

The M100, which comes in gray or white, also comes with an overhead mount, which gives it a look similar to that of a headset.

The device is targeted at professional users, but anyone can purchase it from Vuzix’s website.

Google Glass is only available to users who receive an invitation to purchase it. Those with invitations can buy the gadget for $1,500. It also available on Craigslist and Ebay at steeper prices.
