Google opens sales of Glass to adults in U.S., keeps $1,500 price tag

Google has finally opened up sales of its Glass wearable device to any adult in the U.S., but the gadget remains in a beta phase and is still priced at $1,500.

Any adult living in the U.S. who is interested in purchasing Google’s futuristic glasses can go online to order it. The device is available in five colors -- black, white, orange, blue and brown -- and with numerous frame styles.

Sales opened Tuesday afternoon, and so far only the bold-frame version of the black Glass model is listed as “out of stock.”

Glass connects to users smartphones to relay all sorts of information, including text messages, emails and music. The device displays information on a tiny cube that sits above a user’s right eye. The gadget is also capable of taking photos and shooting videos. Users can control the gadget using voice commands or with a touch pad located above the right temple.

Many expected Google to open sales of Glass to the general public, but at a much lower price than $1,500 so it could attract more consumers. It is unclear if that is still going to be the case.

Google announced Glass two years ago, and it began delivering the device to early “explorers” in early 2013.

At first, users had to receive an invitation so that they could buy the device, but last month, Google opened up sales to any adult in the U.S. in a one-day experimental sale. It seems the experiment was successful, with Google saying that it will now sell the gadget online “as long as we have it on hand.”

Last week, Google announced that it would soon begin testing new ways to “expand the program,” meaning it is getting ready to try selling Glass in more ways.

“We learned a lot when we opened our site a few weeks ago, so we’ve decided to move to a more open beta,” Google said in a post.
