The curved-screen smartphone wars are on their way, with LG saying it plans to release such a device in November.

The South Korean company confirmed rumors that it will release a smartphone with a screen that curves from top to bottom. LG officials told Reuters that the company has begun mass-producing the necessary screens and plans to launch the phone next month.

LG’s curved-screen smartphone will feature a 6-inch screen, according to Reuters.

The announcement follows that of Samsung, which last month said customers can expect that company’s curved-screen smartphone to be formally unveiled later this month. The screen on Samsung’s phone will curve from side to side, Reuters reported, citing an unnamed source.

Samsung’s and LG’s devices will be the first of their kind. Curved screens will presumably allow companies to create devices with innovative shapes and designs.

The gadgets take advantage of OLED screens, which are bendable, ultra-thin and more difficult to damage. Until now, mass-producing curved OLED screens had been a tough task that no company had mastered.
