Samsung said to be making Galaxy Mega phone with 6.3-inch screen

If the 5.5-inch screen on the Samsung Galaxy Note II somehow isn’t big enough for you, you might be in luck.

Samsung is reportedly working on two even bigger smartphones, including one that will feature a whopping 6.3-inch screen. The other device will include a 5.8-inch screen.

According to SamMobile, a news site that covers the tech company, the two enormous smartphones will be called Galaxy Mega and could hit store shelves as soon as mid-2013.

If Samsung does indeed sell a Galaxy Mega with a 6.3-inch screen, it may have the largest screen of any smartphone. Currently, the 6.1-inch screen on the Huawei Ascent Mate is regarded as the largest screen of any smartphone on the market. For comparison, the iPhone 5 has a 4-inch screen while the iPhone 4S and 4 feature 3.5-inch screens.

Samsung is largely responsible for the trend in smartphones with 5-inch screens thanks to the success it has found since late 2011 with the original Galaxy Note, which boasted a 5.3-inch screen.

But a Galaxy Mega with a 6.3-inch screen is treading much closer to tablet territory than smartphones. Some of the most popular small-size tablets, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Nexus 7, feature 7-inch screens.

As pointed out by GigaOM, the large-size screens might make sense for Samsung. Over the last few years, the South Korean company has been building apps for its phones that can run on the screen at the same time as other apps. A larger screen would enable users to run two apps while still having plenty of real estate.
