Help raise money for Philippine typhoon victims by surfing the Web

Share

Starting this weekend, users can help raise money for victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines by simply surfing the Web.

Tab for a Cause, the organization behind a Web browser extension that donates money to charity every time users open a new tab on their browsers, said it will donate an extra $0.10 for every user who signs up for the service between Saturday and Tuesday.

The campaign is set to coincide with Giving Tuesday, a new holiday meant for users to give to charities after excessive shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The money donated by Tab for a Cause will be given to Action Against Hunger’s Typhoon Haiyan fund.

The way Tab for a Cause works is by showing users ads every time they open a new tab on their browsers, instead of just a blank page.

The money generated from those advertisements -- fractions of a cent for each tab -- are then donated to various charities, including Water.org, Human Rights Watch and the International Peace Institute as well as Action Against Hunger.

Tab for a Cause has been around since late 2011 and has about 30,000 users. Users have helped the nonprofit organization donate nearly $20,000 to date simply by surfing the Web.
