For its 7th birthday, Twitter looks back in video timeline
Twitter turned 7 Thursday, and to celebrate the occasion, the social network posted a quick video timeline recapping its history from an idea on a notebook to the major tech player it is today.
The video starts by showing the sketch for a site called my.stat.us thatâs drawn out with a big text field laid in the center so users can post their status. That, of course, is the foundation for the Twitter we have now.
From there, we see the first tweet ever sent, written by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. He said âjust setting up my twtter.â The social network, of course, was born in 2006, when it wasnât cool to have vowels in your name if you were a tech startup.

Next we learn that the first hashtags and retweets didnât come until a year later, in 2007, and a little later in 2009, we see the image of US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River that went viral on Twitter. That event was the first time the world saw the value of Twitter as a means of citizen journalism and sharing breaking news instantaneously.
The video also shows us the first tweet from Oprah, and Shaqâs response telling her she tweeted in all-caps, the first tweet from space, and a video from Jan. 25, 2011, in Egyptâs Tahrir Square -- highlighting Twitterâs importance during the Arab Spring.
We also see how tweets from Japan were retweeted following 2011âs earthquake and tsunami, President Obamaâs âFour more yearsâ pictures, which is the most retweeted tweet ever, and then Vine, Twitterâs new short-video sharing mobile app.
All in all, itâs a well done video sharing the event that is #Twitter7.
