Yelp adds L.A. restaurants’ health grades to review pages

Share

Yelpers can now view restaurants’ health grades directly on the popular reviews site, thanks to a partnership between Yelp and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Now when visitors to the site check out a restaurant’s consumer reviews, they’ll also see its health rating toward the top of the page, in the same section as hours, price range, parking information and noise level.

Although restaurant inspection scores have been available on the health department’s website since the inception of the grading program in the 1990s, this will be the first time consumers will be able to see the data in conjunction with photos and reviews, the department said Thursday

“Our research has shown that the posting of restaurant letter grade cards was associated with a reduction in food-borne illness hospitalizations,” said Jonathan E. Fielding, director of public health for the county. “Publishing inspection scores online in conjunction with consumer-written reviews of restaurants is the logical next step.”

Consumers who visit Yelp will be able to see the restaurant’s latest inspection letter grade and any violations and corrections.

Grades below a C (69 out of 100 points or below) will appear as a numerical score. The A, B and C letter grades are already familiar sights on food facility windows and doors.

Restaurant inspection data on Yelp is currently available for any inspections completed after July 1.

Information for inspections before July 1 can be found on the health deparment’s website. Mobile food facility (food trucks, hot dog carts, etc.) inspection information is not available online at this time, but will be added in the future.
