A 26-year-old female driver was killed and two other women in her vehicle were injured when her car slammed into a pole in the South Chicago neighborhood this morning, authorities said.
Marsela Castillo, of the 11100 block of South Avenue O, was pronounced dead at Trinity Hospital at 4:30 a.m, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The crash, which prompted a pin-in response by the Chicago Fire Department, happened just before 4 a.m. in the 8800 block of South Chicago Avenue.
Castillo was driving at a high rate of speed southbound on South Chicago Avenue when she drove through a red light at the intersection of 87th Street, said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien.
After driving through the red light, Castillo skidded and drove onto the northbound lanes before slamming into a light pole, O'Brien said.
One of the two other women was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and the other woman was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, police said.
The two passengers were originally listed in critical condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
