A head-on traffic crash in McHenry County Sunday afternoon left four people injured, authorities said.
A Nissan Altima traveling southbound on Route 12 crossed the center of the road and collided with a northbound Toyota RAV4, Officer Jared Tyunaitis of the Richmond police said, citing preliminary information.
The collision happened about 3:20 p.m. on Route 12 south of Hill Road in Richmond. A third driver steered into a ditch to avoid the other two vehicles, Tyunaitis said.
Two of the Toyota's occupants, a 12-year-old boy and a 43-year-old woman, were taken by helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Another occupant, an 18-year-old woman, was taken by ambulance to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center in McHenry.
The driver of the Nissan was extricated from his car by first responders and also taken to Centegra.
Police and fire officials declined to describe the conditions of those injured. The driver of the third vehicle was not hurt.
The Nissan's driver, a 64-year-old man whose name was not immediately released, was cited for improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Tyunaitis said.
Traffic in both directions was blocked for about 45 minutes after the collision.
