Jazz Showcase, March 13 Miles Davis' landmark recording ¿Birth of the Cool¿ has inspired various revivals, but few as luminous as the one that Ted Hogarth and the Mulligan Mosaics Nonet offered. Performing a smart new transcription of the album, Mulligan and colleagues brought a radiant glow to this music, but that wasn't all. Rather than merely revisit the album's famous tracks, the nonet also performed new, original compositions for the same instrumentation. As a result, listeners heard a freshly pristine "Birth of the Cool," but also contemporary perspectives on long-revered repertoire.
