'A Steady Rain' ★★★

Peter DeFaria and Randy Steinmeyer play two struggling Chicago cops in Keith Huff's heart-thumping ¿A Steady Rain,¿ a gritty, emotionally resonant police yarn ¿ much in the style of ¿The Wire¿ or ¿Homicide¿ ¿ about loyalty, partnership, crime, family and the soul-snuffing difficulties of patrolling the rough Chicago streets. The first time they filled these roles, for the premiere at Chicago Dramatists in 2007, the air was thick with possibility. But on Broadway in 2008, it starred the less-than-authentic Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig. Five years later, DeFaria and Steinmeyer are back behind their old shared desk in a reprise staging. This remains a powerful and poignant piece of Chicago writing and a work of thick, juicy storytelling. Through Sept. 2 at Chicago Dramatists, 1105 W. Chicago Ave.; $45 at 800-595-4849 or asteadyrainchicago.com
