Chicago Kids and Kites Festival

The Chicago Kids and Kites Festival is a fun way to put the unyielding Chicago wind to good use. Besides raising kites high in the sky, there will be a workshop on Afghan fighter kites, a demonstration by professional fliers from Chicago Kite, a Bug Exhibit from Brookfield Zoo and the Big Kite Candy Drop (weather permitting). Why go: Here's a NATO event that won't involve rerouting or working from home, as summit organizers are providing 5,000 kite kits, flags and other info for the kids. Reconsider: You think kites are for nerds. Details: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday at Cricket Hill, Lake Shore Drive and Montrose Avenue; free; 312-744-3316,
