Daniel Spielman, 42, New Haven, Conn.

A computer scientist at Yale University, Spielman has collaborated with colleagues to develop seemingly arcane codes that have practical implications, including in broadcasting and decoding high-definition TV transmissions. His work on randomness impacts our understanding of science, engineering, business and statistics. And his work with others on unidirectional graphs could have impact on such applications such as DNA sequence analysis and operating system design. Home Front Communications
