The microbiologist, a professor at the California Institute of Technology, studies how bacteria interact with their hosts, to positive and detrimental effects. Mazmanian's work has shown that certain bacteria can affect immune-system response in distant locations in the body, and that some bacteria can impact the emergence of autoimmune disorders. This research could impact understanding and treatment of various maladies, such as Crohn's disease.
