Looking Ahead: Yasiin Bey (Mos Def)

Just as you can't judge a book by its cover, the same can be said for a rapper of a different name. Prolific hip-hop artist Mos Def has recently introduced himself to the public as Yasiin Bey (he has used the name privately since 1999), but his ability to spit the poetic, metaphorical and experimental like no other MC has not changed. Why go: One never knows what the ever-evolving Bey has planned for a live performance of "UMI Says," "Ms. Fat Booty" or "Quiet Dog" other than it will be like nothing you've heard. Reconsider: Really, Bey and his Black Star compadre Talib Kweli couldn't work out the logistics to do a show together? (Kweli will be at The Shrine on Oct. 31). 8 p.m. Thursday at The Shrine, 2109 S. Wabash Ave.; $40; theshrinechicago.com
