Dana Carvey

Dana Carvey's Church Lady, Garth of "Wayne's World" and President George H.W. Bush impersonation were some of the characters the comedian brought to "Saturday Night Live" during his seven-year tenure as a cast member. Carvey chose to be a "present father" after the cancellation of his short-lived 1996 variety show, "The Dana Carvey Show," but is using the stand-up stage -- now that his kids are all grown up -- to get his comedic juices flowing again. Why go: You can see a master of comedy creating onstage; right before your eyes you'll see what works and fails. Reconsider: You are more impressed with the breakaway talent from Carvey's variety show: Louis C.K., Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell. 8 p.m. Saturday at Arcada Theatre, 105 E. Main St., St. Charles; $39-$89; 630-962-7000, oshows.com
