Director John Carpenter ushered in the age of the slasher picture with this 1978 mega hit that also includes his own iconic, synth-based theme. Reminiscent of the repetitive melodies of "Tubular Bells" and Goblin¿s main theme for "Suspiria," Carpenter's circular pattern, played in 5/4 time, is underlined with an ominous, threatening bass line that fills the listener with dread. Carpenter composed and played his score out of financial necessity -- in three days -- and has gone on to find himself hailed for his unique, aural vision. The score influenced dozens of other slasher pictures (including the "Nightmare on Elm Street" series), while Carpenter has gone on to write the music for most of his films.
