The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has ruled the shooting death of a 4-year-old Indiana boy accidental, authorities said.
Still, Beecher police continue to investigate the death of Ash Wimbley, who appeared to have shot himself at a liquor store in the south suburb last week. According to the medical examiner, the boy, from Cedar Lake, suffered a gunshot wound to the face.
The shooting occurred Thursday morning at Tubby's Wine and Spirits at 311 Dixie Highway, police said. Police were called to the store around 10:16 a.m. and discovered the boy suffering, said Lt. Rick Emerson. Wimbley was transported to St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Chicago Heights where he was later pronounced dead.
A handgun was recovered from the store, Emerson said, but on Monday police were still trying to determine who owned the handgun and why the youth was in the store, he said. No arrests have been made in connection to the shooting, Emerson said.
The owner of Tubby's was not available for comment.
