1 dead, 5 shot in separate incidents early Sunday

A 49-year-old man died and five other people were hospitalized after being shot in separate incidents early Sunday, authorities said.

Combined with the shooting of a 3-year-old boy Saturday night on the Far South Side and the shooting death of one and wounding of two others in a West Side incident, the overnight gun violence totals included at least two dead and 9 wounded.

Kelly Vann, 49, of the 8900 block of South Commercial Avenue, was declared dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center after being shot in the 8800 block of South Exchange Avenue early today, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

At about 2:14 a.m., police were called to the 8800 block of South Exchange Avenue in the South Chicago neighborhood for a report of a person shot at that location, police said. When they arrived they found the victim in an abandoned lot with a gunshot wound to his right temple, police said.

He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said. No one was in custody this afternoon, police said.

Vann was on parole in a 2011 drug case and had several other criminal convictions, including for burglary and armed robbery, court and state records show.
